Techniques - Preparing a pot to receive a tree
When repotting it is essential to anchor the tree into the pot using wires so that the roots are not disturbed when the tree is moved, or when the tree is rocked by strong winds.

This photo shows the wires in position

Again we use 2mm wire and the wire is passed through the hole in the pot and then up through the hole in the other side of the pot as shown here.
In this case it is a circular pot with only three holes so we are using three pieces of wire, and this will hold the tree securely in the pot.
In the case of oblong. square, or oval pots there are usually 4 holes and so two wires are used.

The example at the top of the page shows a pot that has small holes to take the anchoring wires and these are quite common now, but many older pots do not have them. The two photos above show how the wires are fitted into the drainage holes in a pot with two holes.
In the case of a larger pot with four drainage holes you would still treat it the same way, but with one wire in each pair.
