Pad refinement.
When the tree has started to put on a lot of growth then we can think about further refinement.
The pads should be rounded off at the ends as shown here.
The top of the pads should be curved and not flat. This will take time to develop and has only just been started in this photo.
At this stage care must be taken with the length of the tip that is removed. If the new growth covers the one underneath then the top leaf needs to be cut back further to prevent the lower one being starved of light. Sharp fine scissors should be used for this.
