| Seven seedlings were selected from a UK dealer on a trip in January 2007. They were all removed from their pots and root washed. They were kept in a Superthrive solution overnight before being worked on. |

| As can be seen by the photo above the roots were well developed. |

For group plantings of any type it is essential that when assembling them you have plenty of wires. Each tree will need to be secured and the more pairs of wires the better.
This pot was chosen at this stage for size, colour, and because it has six drainage holes. This makes adding wires easy and will aid drainage. |

| A mixture of Akadama and Kiryu was used. Coarse material was placed in the base of the pot. A base layer of medium material was then added. |

Each tree was prepared by first wiring all the trunks and any major branches or suckers that could be used to add stems to the group.
Approximately one third of the roots were then removed. More roots than for normal planting were left for two reasons. Firstly to make it easier to tie in the trees. Secondly this species suckers from roots and at this stage with a young group they can be encouraged and used to bulk up the group. It is also possible to put in cuttings which should root easily.
