Case history
The pictures below were taken at the end of the day’s work styling and refining the tree. The crown of the tree still requires some wiring to “layer out” the foliage and the jin/shari needs further cleaning up and protecting with lime sulphur.

The pictures below were taken October 2005, two weeks after the initial styling/refinement that was carried out at our Artistic Bonsai Circle group meeting with Lee Verhorevoort. Some more wiring has been carried out to the crown of the tree at the back to refine the foliage pads, along with a couple of other areas to crisp up the lines of the foliage.

The jin/shari has been cleaned up using a Dremel with wire brush attachment and lime sulphur applied to protect the wood, this was mixed with some Chinese black ink and Lac Balsam to tone it down. In addition the trunk of the tree together with the main branches were lightly sanded using the Dremel with a sanding flapper in order to bring out the red colour in the bark. Care should be taken when carrying out this procedure as if the sander is left in one place too long or applied too heavily the dull brown outer bark can be removed beyond the desired red to expose the cambium layer under.
