| Case history |
| This Juniper sargentii was purchased in January 2005 whilst the members of the Artistic Bonsai Circle group were on a visit to a bonsai nursery in the South East of England. |
 |
January 2005.
The tree had only just arrived in the country, having originated from a nursery in Kawasaki City located just south of Tokyo, Japan. The tree has been grown on a piece of Kyushu stone and has good movement, taper and branch/foliage placement.
Unfortunately the tree had to stay at the nursery until later in the year as it was still in quarantine. |
September 2005.
The tree was taken to our Artistic Bonsai Circle group meeting, where we had Lee Verhorevoort working with us on our trees for the day.
The first task was to clean up the trunk and branches to remove old loose bark and any algae staining. This was done using a fine copper wire brush and during this operation a shari was revealed which ran the full height of the trunk. Prior to cleaning up the trunk this was more or less hidden by general grime. |

| The photo on the left shows the front view of the tree, and the photo on the right the rear view. These were taken before any work was done on the tree. |
| |
| The next stage of work was to remove all the dead foliage from inside the pads together with any foliage that was growing from branch fork junctions etc. |
|

 |
|
| The next stage in styling the tree is to selectively prune the foliage to profile shape into pads. This is done with scissors and the photo illustrates how much foliage has been removed. |
The pruning process involves removing all downward pointing shoots and pruning other shoots to create a pad shape that will be thin around the perimeter and thicker or deeper in profile as the pad extends closer to the trunk line. A section viewed through a foliage pad would produce a rounded almost aerofoil profile. |
