The tree showing where the stub remains from the broken branch

Unfortunately we had a major disaster with the tree after re-potting. The tree had been taken outside the workshop to water in using a Superthrive mix, and placed on the ground in what seemed like a safe place. However at some point later on one of the dogs decided to charge past the tree and snapped off the second branch up on the right hand side of the tree.

The pictures on this page were taken in March 2005 a few weeks after the re-potting.

The broken branch
The pictures show the quite major branch that was snapped off.
We cut the broken stub on the tree clean leaving a short stub in order not to damage any dormant bud that might be present and applied some wound sealant. Now we hope for a bud to pop to re-grow the branch.

Option 1 for new branch Should a dormant bud not break at the base of the snapped off branch, there are a couple of other options that could be employed.
The first option indicated in this picture would be to use the indicated downward growing shoot and grow it on to fill in the space left by the missing original branch.

Option 2 if new bud does not appear As another option there is an inward growing shoot on an opposite branch which could be grown on and then used to form an approach graft to the trunk at the point where the other branch was broken off.
