Case history - 12

During April 2007 foliage thinning out and cutting back new shoot extensions took place. This was followed in the second week of May by the complete de-foliation of the tree leaving only the leaf petiole. In some inner areas smaller leaves were left in place. The most dominant part of the tree is the crown and in this area all the leaves are always removed completely.
By the second week of June new leaves had emerged on the tree and though it looked a bit patchy at first the tree is so vigorous that before long it was fairly full looking again and requiring some pruning back of the new leggy shoots to a pair of leaves with harder pruning being carried out to the crown. Some of the new shoots were also wired and their position adjusted to produce better pad lines.

The tree continued to grow throughout the remainder of the year, with general maintenance work being undertaken comprising of some leaf thinning and removal of the odd larger leaves as required. The tree went into its usual autumn colours and leaf drop.

In January 2008 some time was spent de-wiring smaller new branches that had been adjusted to improve the pad lines last year. This work was followed up later in the month at a Classical Bonsai Circle group meeting hosted by Dan Barton when the newly grown bottom right hand branch which had been wired last year with aluminium wire wrapped in self-amalgamating rubber tape was de-wired.
