This Trident Maple root over rock style was purchased in March 2004 whilst the members of the Artistic Bonsai Circle group were on a visit to a Bonsai nursery in South East England. The tree had been imported into the nursery from Japan . |

March 2004.
The tree had good trunk taper and root structure gripping the rock well, and it was also a nice piece of Japanese Ibigawa rock as well. The tree had no fine secondary branches, most of the growth had been pruned back to the main branches, so these would have to be grown on over a period of time.
The following month after purchasing the tree it was taken to our Artistic Bonsai Circle group meeting to carry out some work. The leafs were just starting to emerge so the most vigorous ones were pinched back, in addition some of the old thick branch stubs were cut back. |
| In May the tree was again taken to one of our group meetings. It had been two weeks since the last meeting and pinching of the more vigorous leaves, and now there was a profusion of leaves everywhere. During the meeting the whole tree was completely scissor leaf pruned preserving just the leaf stalk, or petiole, at the leaf base. Some of the remaining leaf stems were soft wired and arranged to start directing future branch/twig directions. |

May 2004.
By the end of the month the tree was coming back out in leaf again.
The new shoots were again growing straight up but now had another smaller set of leaves below the main leaves that had developed from the dormant buds contained at the base of each leaf. Again the shoots would need to be pinched back, the lead shoot would be cut back to leave the pair of smaller leaves.

This picture shows the new vertical growth in the new shoots and indicate the point where the lead shoot now needs to be cut back to leaving generally wherever possible two leaves (one pair). The leaf stalk, or petiole, is left as it serves to nourish the tree and prevents damage to the remaining leaves as it naturally dries up. |

Where a shoot is required for extension to a foliage pad or branch it can be soft wired into position and should be allowed to grow on to get to the appropriate thickness or length and then the terminal shoot pinched out. |
