The tree in February 2005   A top view of the tree

In February 2005 the tree was taken to our ABC group meeting where some more scissor pruning was done. Cutting into the crown of the tree some more to produce a more contoured profile.
This is an ongoing process, waiting for more growth to develop to be able to “cut in” more and develop more contours.

In May 2005 the tree was exhibited at the Joy of Bonsai event at Bath.
The tree had been prepared for the show by carrying out some finger pinching of the new growth to crisp up the foliage pad lines, this included removing any downward pointing shoots.

The trunk was cleaned up by using some fine sandpaper. All the old moss was then removed from the top of the compost and a new top dress of fine sieved Akadama and Fuji grit was added. The pot was cleaned and lightly oiled with Camellia oil.

During the third week of September 2005 the tree was scheduled for some more refinement work to be carried out due to the amount of growth that had been put on over the spring and summer months. The crown of the tree had filled out some more and needed to be opened up more and create some more layers out of the foliage mass. There were also other areas of foliage lower down on the tree which needed some re-wiring and adjustment to improve the contours.

The crown of the tree was “opened up” by wiring the branches and adjusting their position to create another separate foliage layer. In addition some of the shoots were cut back to a back bud using scissors.

In addition the jins and shari were cleaned up and lime sulphur applied to protect the deadwood from rot.
