The tree at the end of the workshop

During the day the remaining secondary and tertiary foliage carrying branches were all wired ready for design placement. In addition the trunk/branches jin and shari were cleaned down with a fine wire brush. This photo gives a view of the tree at this stage.

The tree after the workshop

Working with Lee we sorted out the initial structural styling of the tree, getting the branches/foliage pads inter-relating correctly to each other and opening up the pads to allow more light into the tree.

This in time will promote more bud back and hence produce denser foliage pads.

In February 2004 it was decided the tree should be re-potted. It was not known when the tree had it's last re-potting so it would be a useful exercise to check on how much fibrous root was present and the condition of the compost.
Upon removal of the tree from it's pot one could immediately see that the tree had a very good fibrous root system.

The re-potting was carried out with another member of the ABC group.

A lot of time was spent teasing out the roots and removing as much of the old compost as possible.

The old compost was very open and comprised mostly of a fine river gravel.
