Case History - 3

The roots were very loose on the side of the rock and did not sit properly on the top of the rock as there were big gaps.
I did not want to get rid of it as I had started it years ago so decided to something about it.

The tree and the rock were planted in a bucket in March 2004.
The media used was Akadama.

It has been heavily fertilised every year using large rape seed pellets, and was kept in a south facing position. It has been partly cut back each year as annual growth was more than three feet.

This photo shows a close-up of the roots after removing some of the potting media. The rock is still buried inside.

The two photos above show a close up of the front and back of the roots just above the rock.
In amongst the Akadama there was found to be about 50 vine weevil grubs.

They had done some damage to the big roots by eating the outer bark as can be seen in the two photos above and in the close-up on the right. This should callous over with time.
