This Japanese white pine was imported into the UK by a bonsai dealer in January 2006.
Here the tree can be seen just after arrival, and was still in quarantine. |

The tree was received by the owner in June 2006, and this photo was taken at that time.
The tree had been fed several times whilst at the nursery using a liquid feed. |

June 2006.
Over two hours has been spent trimming and shaping the branches.
Height: 56cm. Spread: 106cm.
Pot: Tokonama.
The tree will now be heavily fed with rape seed during the summer months, and the branches will be wired to improve the shape |

September 2006.
When these trees arrive in the UK from a Japanese nursery they look good, but require quite a lot of refinement before they are suitable for showing.
The photo on the right shows the top view of the lower branch.
The part above the red line shows the foilage as it was. The part below has been thinned out, every small branch wired and placed in position.
At the moment it looks worse than it was before, but this work will encourage new buds to form and so thicken up in this area. It will then be possible to get the pad rounded and in the shape you want.
This work has taken some 8 hours over two days, and the whole tree has to be done this way.
Next year all the wire has to be removed before it starts cutting into the branch, and then you start wiring again. |
