Splitting back the branches The top branches were cut off using a saw, and just a few branches remain.

Hand tools were used to split back the branches as this gives a rougher and more natural finish.

Later on when the tree is being refined then power tools will be used to improve these.

Large root

 Large root after carving.

It was decided that with the large piece of root shown above that I would try and make a feature of this, and the result can be seen on the right.
I am not sure about the thin piece on the top and this may be removed later.
