3rd February 2011. The tree was last repotted two years ago in February 2009. The condition of the roots is very good and similar to last time.
The photos below show the process of hosing down the roots after most of the old media has been removed.
On the left is a close up of a section of the photo right above and shows the water trapped between the roots after the hosing is complete.
It is important that the roots are teased away and cleaned up in this area otherwise the potting media underneath will go dry and the roots in that position will die.
This was done after this photo was taken.
In the photo on the right the pot is ready to receive the tree. The wires are in place and a mix of 70% Akadama and 30% Kiryu is being used.
The loose roots have been trimmed and as is normal with this type of root system the bottom is completely flat. The potting media is raised up slightly in the middle, and then the tree is placed on top. As can be seen in the photo on the left the roots are turned and pressed into the media to ensure there is good contact with no air pockets.
